Impact of training in the specialty of Medical Microbiology in Cuba upon the graduate educational model at Pedro Kouri Tropical Medicine Institute
[摘要] Introduction: the specialty of Microbiology as academic training ensures the continuousdevelopment of the health care graduate program. The specialty was started inCuba in the year 1963 intended for graduate general practitioners, and as of1983 at Pedro Kouri Tropical Medicine Institute, in compliance with the integrationof teaching, care and research activities as a training strategy.Objective: describe the curricular development of the teaching program of the specialtyof Microbiology for doctors.Methods: a pedagogical study was conducted which describes the role of the academic managementmodel in graduate education at Pedro Kouri Tropical Medicine Institute alongthree decades of training in the specialty of Medical Microbiology, in keepingwith the guiding principle of Cuban medical graduate education in terms of theoreticalmethods of analysis, observation and historical-logical synthesis.Results: training of medical microbiologists in three profiles during 33 years and orientationof specialists toward research in three work profiles: bacteriology-mycology,parasitology and virology. Pedro Kouri Tropical Medicine Institute is a leadingcenter for training in this medical specialty and its significance for the servicein the National Health System. The training strategy used is the contributionof a quality teaching process responding to the need for highly qualified professionals:67% PhDs, 612 national and international publications, more than 12 text booksand 174 in journals, participation in scientific events, prizes, awards, patents,and national and international registries.Conclusions: the teaching program for specialization in Medical Microbiology is relevant;is focused and based on topics, problems and tasks assigned by the NationalHealth System. The theoretical and methodological foundation of the programfor the specialty of Microbiology complies with the general goals and the objectivesof the academic activities in the curriculum. The practical implementation andassurance of the curriculum exhibit a process of permanent quality improvementthroughout the years it has been taught.
