Integrated Coastal Zone Management Strategy for Ghana

[摘要] Environmental degradation of coastalareas was identified as a key issue in Ghana'sEnvironmental Action Plan. The central objective of theWorld Bank-assisted Integrated Coastal Zone Management(ICZM) initiative in Ghana, which commenced in 1995, was toidentify economically, socially and environmentallyappropriate interventions and projects in the coastal zonethat improve the prospects for human development. ICZM isrecognized by governments, international agencies and by thedonor community as a process through which coastaleco-systems and resources can be protected, developed andmanaged in a sustainable manner. In order for implementationto be successful, effective ICZM must be based on a clearunderstanding of the complexities of the relation betweencoastal natural resources, and the coastal population thatsubsists on these resources. More concretely, thisunderstanding must relate to how specific economic,political, social and technical parameters link, in areciprocal way, specific coastal ecosystems and specifichuman activities.
