School and Work : Does the Eastern Caribbean Education System Adequately Prepare Youth for the Global Economy
[摘要] As the global economy rapidly changesand new technologies are introduced, more highly skilledworkers are required. In the Organization of EasternCaribbean States (OECS), firms struggle to fill skilledpositions due to a lack of qualified candidates, while thenumber of unemployed low skilled workers is growing. Thisreport is organized into six chapters. After this briefintroduction, the second chapter makes the argument for whyskills matter to the OECS countries. The subsequent threechapters emphasize how education (school) is intrinsicallylinked to the labor market, both in providing initialpreparation and training and in updating workers'skills throughout adulthood (lifelong learning). Thus, thethird chapter discusses how adequately the schools in theOECS prepare youth for the labor market. The fourth chapterfocuses on the transition from the education system to thelabor market. The fifth chapter analyzes the opportunitiesfor workers to continue learning while in the labor force. The final chapter summarizes the main policy recommendationsfor improving education and training in the OECS. Threetransversal themes run through the report: (i) deepeningsub-regional collaboration; (ii) increasing involvement ofthe private sector in education and training; and (iii)enhancing collaboration across different levels of theeducation and training systems.
