Measuring the Gap : Female Education in Sub-Saharan Africa
[摘要] Given the significance of femaleeducation for development, there is an enormous need fordata across countries that can be used to inform policydiscussions within and among individual countries. Nowhere, perhaps is this need greater than in sub - Saharan Africa(SSA) where female participation in education isinordinately low, and where disparities between females andmales vary greatly among countries. the report previewed inthis article responds in two ways to the need for statisticson female education. First, it defines statisticalindicators that can be used to describe the level of femaleparticipation and the disparities between males and femalesin education systems. As one form for these indicators, thereport introduces the concept of the gender ratio as ageneric tool for comparing male and female participation ineducation across all indicators used to assess theperformance of education systems. Second, the reportpresents data from existing sources for the forty-sixcountries in sub - Saharan Africa.
