Die volkstuemliche Lyrik des Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart
[摘要] The thesis deals with that portion of Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubarts portion which has attained a considerable degree of popularity among his contemporaries. It is an attempt to identify the historical, political and biographical factors which are responsible for the widespread popularity of his poems and to discuss the motifs and poetic devices he used. Various examples are cited to illustrate their ;;folksy;; and appealing quality. The pertinent facts are explained through the simultaneous convergence of the following factors: a) The Storm and Stress period. Rebelling against the waning age of reason. Sehubart - a true son of his time - is given to an emotional assertion of individuality. b) Schubarts choice of motif. Making simple people the hero of much of his poetry, he elevated the common man to literary respectability and lent a voice to his grievances and aspirations. c) The impact of biographical elements. Having himself suffered under the misuse of church power and the hypocritical narrowmindedness of the clergy, he attacked an outmoded and irrelevant church. Born into a period of absolutism, into a geographical location where its excesses were most severe, Schubart uses his poetry as an eloquent weans to protest tyranny and stir the minds of bis contemporaries in quest for greater freedom, to raise the broad masses of the lower class from a servile status of obedient subjects to the dignity of full citizenship.
