A Review of Gender Issues in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica
[摘要] This report examines the effect ofgender on socio-economic outcomes in three Caribbeancountries: the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica.Organized in three separate country notes, it covers:demographics, health and reproductive health, violence, education, labor and agriculture. The report is part of alarge effort aimed at establishing a strategic social agendain the region. Many of the key economic issues thatCaribbean countries confront today have an important genderdimension, these includes crime and violence, reproductiveand sexual health issues, low education levels, unstablefamily structure, poverty and inequality. Gender roles andrelations influence these socio-economic issues. Forexample, violent crime is concentrated among young men, whoare both victims and offenders; domestic violence isextensive in the Caribbean sub region and for the most andfor the most part involves men as the aggressors and womenas the victims. Aggressive men behavior has been linked tothe inability of men, mostly low income men, to meet socialexpectations of achieving and providing for the family, aswell as to socialization patterns that teach boys to betough and girls to be submissive. Over the long term, genderwork in the three countries should continue to addresssocialization processes and norms that cause men and womento assume negative roles in the socio-economic stability ofeach country.
