Sustainable Seed Systems in Sub-Saharan Africa

[摘要] This study stresses the need for thecountries in Sub-Saharan Africa to put in place a seedsystem which would meet the seed needs of a wide range offarmers, classified according to their risk tolerancecapacity and resource endowments. Obviously, a singlestrategy cannot meet this objective. The study thereforerecommends a mix of strategies, and argues for a"fit" between the country concerned and the seedsystem. It also examines the relationship between the seedsystem and other services to farmers such as research,extension, rural infrastructure and marketing. In the lightof a detailed analysis of the issues relevant to seedsystems, it examines the options available to thepolicymakers in the countries while setting up seed systemsor modifying an existing one, and the implications of eachof the options.
