Egypt : Gulf of Aqaba Environmental Action Plan
[摘要] The intensive development of tourism inthe Gulf of Aqaba presents both an opportunity and a dilemmafor Egypt. Intensive tourism, if left unmanaged, can inflictirreversible damage on coral reef and desert ecosystems andcurtail the area's economic potential. Together withcurrent projections for a rapid expansion of the tourismbase in the Aqaba coast, degradation from mountingrecreational activities give rise to serious concerns aboutthe sustainability of tourism development in the region. Thechallenge is to plan for economic development within a soundenvironmental framework. Implementing the Gulf Of AqabaEnvironmental Action Plan (GAEAP) would protect marineresources, including coral reefs and fisheries, and conservethe aesthetic attributes of the Gulf environment and watersupon which the tourist industry depends. This action plancomprises activities in nine categories: institutionalstrengthening, enforcement of legal and regulatory frameworkat the South Sinai Governorate level, management of marinepollution, flood and earthquake protection, water andwastewater management, solid waste management, protectedareas management, public awareness and environmentaleducation, and assures sustainability of environmentalprotection in the Gulf of Aqaba. The highest priorityactions are decentralizing the institutions to have apresence on the ground, and enforcing the legal andregulatory framework for implementing curative andpreventive environmental measures.
