An architecture for Wichita (Kansas)
[摘要] An improbable relationship exists between monumentality, which is called Apollonian--universal and timeless--and regionalism, which is Dionysian--local and time-specific. A city requires an architecture that is both, an architecture that monumentalizes what is unique about itself and its people. Wichita, Kansas, is a city that sits in the middle of the vast grid of the American Midwest. It also suffers from a sort of identity crisis typical of that region. What images for Wichita should be promoted, and how? An urban design scheme which establishes the Arkansas River as a monument for the city and which reinforces the genius loci of the area is proposed, along with a specific project for a hotel to provide a social forum in the center of the city and show how future building might relate to the scheme.
