Type and craft in the production of architecture (Texas)

[摘要] Type and craftsmanship are closely bound in an architecture of urban density. Craftsmanship, manipulating material and understanding material culture provides an essential base for knowledge that can guide the design process. Type, acting as a neutral construct relies on craftsmanship to resolve conflict, respond to local traditions of construction, and develop cultural coherence. The proposed mixed-use housing development for the Magnolia Park district of Houston draws on local typological models and an analysis of local construction relationships to make an architecture that is legible and meaningful in its specific situation.
