Occurrence of polar stratospheric clouds at Kiruna

[摘要] Polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) are oftenobserved in the Kiruna region in northern Sweden, east of the Scandinavianmountain range, during wintertime. PSC occurrence can be detected byground-based optical instruments. Most of these require clear troposphericweather. By applying the zenith-sky colour index technique, which works undermost weather conditions, the data availability can be extended. The observationssuggest that PSC events, especially of type II (water PSCs) may indeed morecommon than predicted by synoptic models, which is expected because of thefrequent presence of mountain-induced leewaves. However, it will be ofimportance to increase the density of independent observations.
