Feeding ammoniated straw to cattle and sheep in Syria

[摘要] Fivetrials,twowithheifersandthreewithsheep,werecarriedouttoevaluatetheeffectofstrawtreatmentonanimalperformance.Inthefirsttrialwith28Shamiheifers,14wereofferedacontrol(C)dietcomposedof5.9kg/dayofconcentrateandhay(1:1ratio)whereas,inthetreatmentdiet,20%ofthedailyfeedallowancewasreplacedbyurea-treatedstraw(US)offeredadlibitum.Inthesecondtrial20FriesianheiferswerefedeitherUSoruntreatedstraw(S)andconcentrate.IntwotrialswithAwassisheep,onewith70ewelambsandonewith32dryewes,USwascomparedwithSastheonlysourcesoffeed.Inthelasttrial,42lactatingAwassieweswereonaconventionaldiet(Control)andanother42eweswereoffered600gofammonia-treatedstraw(AS)dailyasreplacementfor100gconcentrate,100gbarleygrain,100gvetchandbarleyhayand100gwholelentilpods.BothUSandAShadhighercrudeprotein(Nx6.25)content(S37,US122,AS110gNx6.25/kgDM)anddigestibility(S40%,US53%,AS54%).TheShamiheifersonUSgrewfaster(Plt;0.01)thanthoseonS(US,660vsS,524g/d).FriesianheifersontheUStended(Plt;0.08)togrowbetterthanthoseontheS(US,680vsS,541g/d).Inthetwotrialswithsheep,animalsconsumingUStendedtoperformbetter(plt;0.08)thanthosewithS,althoughinthestudywithlambsbothgroupslostweight.InthetrialwithdairyAwassiewesthereplacementofconcentratebyASresultedinlower(Plt;0.05)milkyield(C,462vsAS,432gmilk/d)withoutanysignificant(Pgt;0.1)effectonweightchanges(C,3vsAS,26g/d).
