Unusual Incubation: Long-Billed Dowitcher Incubates Mammalian Bones
[摘要] Itiswellestablishedthatoncebirdshavelaidtheireggstheysometimesincubatenon-eggobjects.However,reportsofbirdsincubatingsolelynon-eggobjects(withoutpriormanipulationbyresearchers)arerare.HerewereportonourobservationofaLong-billedDowitcherLimnodromusscolopaceusincubatingaclutchcomposedentirelyofmammalianbones.Toourknowledge,thisisthefirstreporton(a)incubationofforeignobjectsinScolopacidae,(b)incubationofa‘clutch’composedentirelyofbones,and(c)incubationofforeignobjectsinanestatypicalforthisspeciesinbothconstructionandnesthabitat.Wediscusspossibleexplanationsforthispresumablymaladaptivebehaviour.
