Nest Reuse by Eurasian Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla
[摘要] Reusingoldnestsforbreedingmightprovidebirdswithbenefitssuchassavingthetimeandenergyneededtobuildanewnest,orbydecreasingtheriskofpredationwhilebuildinganest.Despitethesebenefits,manyspeciesusetheirnestsonlyonce.ThisstudyaimedtodeterminehowfrequentlyEurasianBlackcapsSylviaatricapilla,whichbuilddelicateopencupneststhatareparticularlysusceptibletodamage,mightreusetheirnestwithinaseasonandifextensivedamagetoanestlimiteditsreuse.Iconductedthestudyin2002–2008inforestsnexttothecityofBydgoszczincentralPoland.Iexamined479Blackcapnestsafterthefailureorsuccessofthenestwasknown.Nestswereclassifiedasdamagedorundamaged(73.7%ofthesample).Onlyfournestswerereused,representing0.8%ofallnestsand1.1%oftheundamagednests.Thelargenumberofundamagedbutinactivenestsindicatedthattheextentofdamagewasunlikelytobethereasonthatnestswererarelyreused.ThestudyalsoshowedthatBlackcapsrarelyusedmaterialfromanoldnesttobuildanewnest.
