Lung Cancer Incidence Trends in Iran and in Six Geographical Regions of the Country (2000 - 2005)

[摘要] Background:Lungcancer,themostcommontypeofcancerinhumans,istheleadingcauseofcancerdeathsglobally,accountingfor1.38milliondeathsperyear(18.2%ofallcancerdeaths).LungcanceristhethirdmostcommontypeofcancerinIran.Objectives:ThepresentstudyinvestigatedtheincidenceoflungcancerinsixgeographicalregionsofIran.MaterialsandMethods:Dataforannualcasesoflungcancerwereobtainedfromthenationalcancerregistryduringtheyears2000-2005.Theratesofincidencewerestandardizedusingworldhealthorganization(WHO)populationdata,andconfidenceintervalswerecalculatedat95%.Iranwasdividedintosixareasaccordingtogeographicaldifferences.ThePoissonregressionmodelwasusedtotestthesignificanceofchangesintheincidenceratesduringthestudyperiodResults:Theage-standardizedratesoflungcancerformenandwomenincreasedfrom0.8and0.3per100,000peoplein2000to4and1.5in2005,respectively.Thehighestrateoflungcancerwasobservedinthemountainousregion,andthelowestrateoccurredinthewesternprovincesoftheCaspiansearegion.Despitethedifferenceintheslopeofchanges,thereisanincreasingtrendintheincidenceoflungcancerinallgeographicalareas.Conclusions:Thecurrentincidenceratesoflungcancerinallthegeographicalareasexaminedaregenerallyincreasing.Unfortunately,theratesofurbanization,environmentalpollution,andsmokingtendencyarealsoincreasinginIran;tocontrolthesetrendsandadjusttheseriskfactors,officialsshouldhelpmorewithpublic-programplanning.
